Clackity Saga update and new testsThis is a short update for this week as I only worked on the Jeep a little bit getting back to trying to figure out the clackity issue on the rear axle. Next week will be a bit more busy as I work on some new tests to, hopefully, solve this ongoing issue!
Setting a Ring and PinionNow that I have a second GPW rear axle ready to go, it was time to get to the one thing I don’t enjoy doing and has been an issue for quite some time… setting the ring and pinion. This update is not for the person who wants to do something easy, this is a LOT of work requiring lots of changes that can take hours/days to do. I’ve tried to simplify the entire process the best I can, and it’s still complicated! So join me on one of the most complicated processes to do on a Jeep! I also cover the removal of the ‘bad’ rear axle out of the Jeep.
Rear Axle Wars – Episode 7: A New HopeWith the rear axle clackity issue eluding myself and many other trying to help me out, I’ve decided to go in a different direction and restore ANOTHER wartime GPW rear axle to replace the one I restored. Join me over the new few weeks as I restore and rebuild this axle and hopefully, solve the last major issue!

GPW Axle work begins & Halloween Event!Finally, after nearly 10 months, the 1943 GPW axles I’ve been slowly restoring to replace the CJ axles currently on the Jeep are starting to be put back together! After several weeks of issues getting the ring and pinions set, both axles are finally set! Now to put them together. This week, I started work on the rear axle first, with everything from adding the drum bearings to setting the brakes!

Fire Extinguisher, more Horn Work, Axle work, and more!This week continues the busy work with all the new items I acquired for the Jeep in the previous updates. I changed the mount for my Horn based on some new evidence, finished the restoration of a proper Fire Extinguisher, installed the GPW dipstick, I started work on the replacement GPW hood, and more axle work (which ran into a major halt).

Axle work begins and a Fire Extinguisher!PART 2: Going through the rest of the items from the haul last week including restoring the GPW Dip Stick and tube. Ring & Pinion journey, Fire Extinguisher Decal, looking for more history, etc!This week I finally saw the light of the end of the tunnel trying to acquire a ring and pinion set… which revealed a great surprise! I then attempted to find some more history on my Jeep via the body tub, more work on the Fire Extinguisher decal, and finally finding a wartime jerry can for the Jeep!

More axle workAfter last week’s excitement, this week was much more calm. This week I continued to clean/disassemble the wartime GPW axles and sandblast various parts documenting F stamps along the way. I also started to restore parts of the emergency brake and checked the PCV valve for carbon/fuel buildup.
Markings are finished!As the New Year quickly sped past, the Jeep as entered what I’d call the final phase for the restoration and it so close to being ‘done’ that it shouldn’t be much longer now with the small projects left. This week I was able to work quite a bit on the Jeep, with the last markings being put on, continuing work on the GPW axles, and starting work on adding the trailer socket shield.
