The complete ‘clackity’ Axle SagaIt’s been 5 months now since I replaced the CJ axles on my Jeep with original GPW wartime ones. I’ve been plagued with a ‘clackity’ sound that just won’t go away after all these months, lots of work, lots of money, countless tests, etc. So I thought for this week I’d go through the entire story from start to finish. It’s been frustrating, to say the least! Join me on this ongoing journey…

Drag Links, Wheel Alignment, Brake Bleeding…Work continues at a rapid pace with the GPW axles! With the CJ axles GONE, the wartime restored GPW axles are going in. This update is packed with things from the installation of the GPW drag link, adjusting the steering, finding a solution to the bending spring leaf plates, setting the wheel alignment and toe-in (with a diagram!), and finally… bleeding the brakes!

Rear Axle Extravaganza!This past week was a whirlwind of work on the rear axle replacement, finally removing the CJ axles and bringing in the wartime GPW one with combat rims and correct Firestone tires! It wasn’t all fun, though, as I had to weld underneath the Jeep, ran into some issues reinstalling the springs, and more. But still, making progress!
AXLES FINISHED!This past week was quite busy with lots of work done on the GPW front axle, and it’s FINALLY done bringing the restoration of the axles to a close! I installed the Tie Rods, prepped the brake lines, painted the axle, cleaned up some important things, added the brake lines, and greased it up! Also in this update, a quick update on the GPW hood and two original WW2 Jeep books I recently picked up.
Small projects, Hood Finishing, and Axle work!Lots of projects this week making for quite the busy work! I worked on various small projects that have been needing to be done, such as modifying a rear seat J hook to fit, prepping shock brackets with fake rivets, and replacing the combat rim valve stem protectors. Work on the hood continues, it’s all finished minus the markings! And I continue work on the front axle installing the RZeppa shafts, packing grease into the knuckle, installing the brake plates/drums, and adjusting the brakes!

Hood work, Firestone Spark Plugs, and Rear Axle work – Part 1!This week’s update will be a two part post once again! I got quite a few things in the mail to continue my ongoing quest to correct post-war things on the Jeep, got more radioactive Firestone spark plugs, worked on the GPW hood including fixing some stress cracks, and fixed a stripped bolt hole in the rear axle hub with a Helicoil kit in this first part!

GPW Axle work begins & Halloween Event!Finally, after nearly 10 months, the 1943 GPW axles I’ve been slowly restoring to replace the CJ axles currently on the Jeep are starting to be put back together! After several weeks of issues getting the ring and pinions set, both axles are finally set! Now to put them together. This week, I started work on the rear axle first, with everything from adding the drum bearings to setting the brakes!

Quarantine work!This week was one of the busiest weeks I’ve had in a long time during this restoration, mostly because of the current stay-at-home quarantine. The e-brake project was mostly finished, I sandblasted and finished all four brake assemblies for the new axles, and wire wheeled other items!
